The first large retrospective since their passing; the eponymous show Bernd & Hilla Becher celebrates the work of the formative German couple in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s five galleries dedicated to drawing prints, and photographs. The exhibition includes sculpture; works on paper; photographs and monographs and traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Art in early 2023.
The serpentine layout of the show follows the journey of the young German couple through their formative years, examines their photographic precision, investigates their later recognition amidst the contemporary art scene of the City, and concludes with their most recognizable work in a large gallery dedicated to typologies.
The design language remains one of precision, contrast, and monumentality, using a restrained pallet of materials and colors whilst working with the existing gallery spaces. The precision of the art hang; and the dialogues between the different works were travailed closely with the curatorial team and other designers. A graphic index system was developed so to guide the visitor in their journey whilst two custom powder-coated metal pedestals highlighted and anchored the exhibit.
